Description :
  • Serves the public by providing books, journals and other offerings from the library collection, as well as on-site and online programs.
  • Designs and offers public programs and exhibits that utilize library materials and themes.
  • Selects and orders books, periodicals, pamphlets, cartographic, photographs and computer software for purchase for the library, subject to review and approval of the Executive Officer.
  • Maintains, processes, and catalogues library collections and associated materials.
  • Provides research and reference assistance to the public, students, staff, and professional and scientific communities.
  • Creates educational programs such as children's story-time and book club as well as public orientations to the library collections.
  • Manages art exhibition program that enlivens the library and exposes the public to a diverse group of artists' works related to plants and the natural world.
  • Performs interlibrary loan duties to lend and borrow necessary materials to and from other libraries.
  • Creates and executes library policies for circulation, accepting donations, determining which materials are candidates for the Rare Book Room, etc.
  • Creates budget for and requests payment for library purchases.
  • Works collaboratively with the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation to fund and purchase items not supplied by the County.
  • Supplements the Library budget through used book sales and other activities.
  • Supervises the Botanical Information Consultant, occasional part-time assistants, as well as a large volunteer contingent who perform mostly library assistant duties.
  • Enforces library rules and implements department policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to Arboretum publications, websites, and programs to support the educational mission of the Arboretum.
  • Provides training for students and volunteer workers and assists Arboretum staff with research.
Requirements :

Graduation from an accredited college with a Master of Library Science degree* or higher - AND - One year's paid library experience with a biological science library, museum library, or other related specialized library collection.
